The EU DPP compliance guide

The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is rewriting the rules of export. From 2027, goods in several categories must carry a Digital Product Passport (DPP) to enter the EU market. This isn't optional — it's a condition of market access. Here's the timeline, the per-industry requirements, and Authentag™'s one-stop path to compliance.

What is a Digital Product Passport

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is the digital carrier of product information required by the EU ESPR — designed to raise transparency, traceability and sustainability across a product's full life cycle.

Unique product identity

Every product must carry a unique digital identifier through which consumers, regulators and recyclers can look up its information. Authentag™'s unique product codes (UIDs) and regulatory access codes are built exactly to this requirement.

Structured data declaration

Material composition, carbon footprint, repairability score, recycling guidance and more — entered as structured data per industry requirements. Authentag™ ships complete DPP data templates for six industries.

Tiered information access

Consumers, brands and regulators each see a different level of information. Authentag™ supports three-tier access control — regulators enter an authorization code to view the full declaration.

Compliance timeline
key dates and industry sequencing

The key milestones for mandatory EU DPP compliance. The earlier you prepare, the lower your compliance cost — and the better your market position.

July 2024In force

ESPR enters into force

The EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU 2024/1781) is published, replacing the 2009 Ecodesign Directive and extending to all product categories entering the EU market. The DPP becomes the technical foundation of a legal requirement.

16 July 2026Confirmed

DPP Registry goes live

The EU's official DPP Web Registry activates; all DPP data must be declared to it. The Registry's launch starts the regulatory clock and is the technical prerequisite for the whole mandatory-compliance regime.

18 Feb 2027Confirmed

Battery Passport enforced

All EV batteries, industrial batteries and LMT batteries (capacity above 2 kWh) entering the EU market must carry a Digital Product Passport. Batteries are the first mandatory category — and the benchmark every other industry references.

Expected 2027Delegated act pending

Apparel & textiles · furniture enforced

ESPR delegated acts are expected in 2027, giving textiles and furniture roughly an 18-month compliance window. They cover fiber composition, carbon footprint, repairability score and recycling guidance — the two most widely affected of all export categories.

Expected 2028–2029In preparation

Electronics & ICT equipment

Consumer electronics and ICT equipment enter scope, requiring component lists, software support periods and spare-part availability. Smartphones and tablets may be pulled in earlier under right-to-repair rules.

The complete compliance
infrastructure Authentag™ provides

From data entry to on-chain proof, Authentag™ covers every step of DPP compliance.

Unique product & regulatory codes

The system generates an ESPR-compliant unique product identifier (UID) and regulatory access code for every product. QR, NTAG 213 and NFC DNA are all carriers recognized for EU DPP.

Structured data entry

Complete DPP templates for six industries; brands enter product information field-by-field through the Dashboard. Products in the same batch share DPP metadata — no need to re-enter each unit.

AES signing + blockchain anchoring

DPP data is AES-signed and written to a distributed database, with a daily Merkle root anchored to the Polygon blockchain. Data is tamper-evident and auditable.

Multilingual landing pages + tiered access

The consumer landing page supports six languages — English, Chinese, German, Italian, French and Spanish — auto-detecting the phone's language. Three-tier access keeps compliance information appropriately segmented.
